Patrick Stewart bypasses Canadian National Sci-Fi Expo 2004
Health issues for the star of "X-Men" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation"

James Armstrong, SFX Event Coordinator

Armstrong: SFX 2004 had a setback this year. Our guest of honor, Patrick Stewart, had to postpone his appearance this weekend. But, we have co-stars that have jumped in to save their Captain: LeVar Burton and Michael Dorn.

Michael Dorn (right), 'Worf'

LeVar Burton (left), 'LaForge'

Dorn: We are filling in for Patrick Stewart. He was in England and, uh, he's a little ill. But, he's doing fine. He's doing really well now.

Burton: He had a little, uh, a little (gag cough) heart murmur. An irregular heartbeat. Uh, he's old, he's very old. And, uh...

Dorn: Day by day.

Burton: Yes, it's a day-by-day proposition when you reach that stage in life.

Dorn: What is he, about ninety-five now?

Burton: Ninety-five... ninety-six.

Dorn: Ninety-six, yeah, that's what I thought!

Patrick Stewart as Cpt. Jean-Luc Picard
Captain Picard: "Just not overly thrilled at the prospect of having my innards becoming the subject of Starfleet gossip."

Dorn: I didn't know about it until LeVar told me. And then, uh, but then I got the message, I got the word...

Burton: And I didn't know about it until Brent told me; and Gates called Brent. And, uh, and that's how we all found out.

Dorn: Yeah.

Captain Picard: "Oh, come on, this is a routine procedure."

Armstrong: Well, right now, all the details are just coming in. We're hoping, by the end of the day, that we have more to tell the fans. But, right now, all we have is that he will be back this fall, in Toronto, for the ticket holders, and he will make it up to them with a very special appearance.

Jonathan Llyr, HypaSpace host

Llyr: Mr. Stewart is now recovering at home after undergoing an angioplasty procedure, last week, to widen a heart artery. We here at Space send him our best wishes and hopes of a speedy recovery.

Shakespeare: 2005 calendars
Shakespeare's Realm

Overstuffed with rare images, excerpts, and knowledgeable synopses, Shakespeare's Realm is a feast for theater lovers. Largely executed in the nineteenth century, the lithographs, photogravures, drawings, and engravings are by turns quaint and exquisite. Each month focuses on one of Shakespeare's plays, featuring at least two illustrations with quotations and contextual notes. The calendar grids present all sorts of information about the lives and times of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Here is another tour de force from the Library of Congress! The calendar lists international holidays as well as moon phases.

Shakespeare's Insults

The hand that penned Shakespeare's lovestruck sonnets also wrote some of the most memorably vile maledictions, brutal personal appraisals, lethal jokes, and lewd, scurrilous insinuations ever to grace the English language. Here are 313 brief excerpts from Shakespeare's plays that, were they spoken in the real world, would affect the recipient as a peeler does a potato. Contextual notes -- i.e., who is abusing whom, why, and in what play -- support each quotation. Published with Library of Congress. The calendar lists U.S., U.K. and Canadian holidays as well as moon phases. This daily boxed calendar may also be mounted on a wall.
